丸っこいフォルム。笑っているようにも見えるフロント・デザイン。排気量わずか360ccの小さな体に日本中の夢を詰めて走ったスバル360――
昭和33年に国産初の4人乗り乗用車として華々しくデビューしたスバル360は、『てんとう虫』の愛称で親しまれた名車。コロンとした形で笑顔を振りまきながら(…笑ってるように見えてたもんで…(^^;）、街を颯爽と走り去っていく姿は今でもはっきりと覚えている。
子供の頃、街中を走るかわいらしい姿に一目ぼれし、大人になったらあの車を運転したいと本気で思っていたほど。あの頃の気持ちは今でも持ち続けているし、もしチャンスがあるなら一度でいいから運転してみたい車のひとつに変わりはない。
その懐かしの名車に、シドニーで出会ってしまったのです！
もう、マジで感動！！かなり興奮しております（笑）
まさか、こんな地球の底で出遭えるなんて、思ってもいなかったので。
ここのところ2台続けてスバリスト（スバル愛好家）と化している我が家。先日、乗り換えの手続きにシドニー北部にあるスバルのショールームにいったところ、あの懐かしのコロンとした姿が目に飛び込んでくるじゃありませんか！
ショールームの中心に、ちょこんと飾られたスバル360。
マイア/MAIA号と名づけられ、ピカピカに磨きあげてもらっていました。
丸っこいフォルムが、さらにかわいく見えるペール・ブルー色の車体に、アイボリーのトップ。中を覗くと、ベージュの皮が張られたシートと白いハンドル、簡素なメーター類がはめ込まれたダッシュボード、そして思いっきり力を込めたら折れちゃいそうなほど細くてチャチなギア（苦笑）。そのインテリアを現在の乗用車と比べると、寂しくなるほどキッチュでシンプル。でも、それがレトロですごくいい感じ♪
この型のスバル360は、オーストラリアにはもう数台しか残っていないらしく、このペール・ブルー色のマイア号もほんの数年前までビクトリア州の片隅で眠っていたのだとか。
―― 車好きだったオーナーが1960年代に輸入し、オーストラリアの田舎道をひた走っていたマイア号。
ところがオーナーの死後、ガレージの中に入れられたまま、すっかり忘れられた存在に。長い年月が経ち、ようやく家族が重い腰を上げてガレージの整理をした際、このスバル360が再び太陽の下に姿を現した。しかし、その時既にエンジンはかからず、車体はボロボロに傷み、変わり果てた姿になっていた…。
何年も開けられることなかったガレージの片隅で、再び走る日をひたすらに待ち続けたスバル360。元オーナーの志を継ぎ、スバルのディラーへ引き取られたこのスバル360は、日本のスバル本社からのヘルプの下、こうして完全にリストアされた――
そんな感動の物語が掲げられていました。
再びオーストラリアのアウトバックをひた走るその姿を想像するだけで、なんだかワクワクしてしまいます（笑）。
物づくりに賭ける日本人の心がぎっしりと詰まったスバル360。
熱心に覗き込んで、感心しているオージー達の姿を見ていると、なんだか誇らしく思ってしまうのであります。

「キャロル」は、当時流行っていた二ール・セダカ
の「Oh Carol!」の語呂合わせ的で、耳ざわりの
良さというか、訴求効果があったものですが
この車のリアウインドーは直角絶壁の平板ガラス。
このスタイリングも斬新で面白かった。

何代目か後のヤツです。
とはいえ、私2才の頃の記憶がいまだに残ってるんですよね。
だからすごい古い人間だと思われる時が…(^^;
マツダのキャロルはなんとなく覚えているような気もしますが、これも発売後、何代目かのヤツ(?)のよう。

迫害を受けるハメに・・・
一見の印象とその後の展開は意を同じくせず、図らぬ展開
を見せるのが世の常。

軽自動車といえば・・・
私の町に『○ライン』という美容院があり、その隣に別人経営の駐車場がある。 ☆○はアルファベット一文字
スペースの関係もあり普通車と軽に分けられている。
ところが軽のスペースが今の660cc用でなく昔の360ccの時の大きさのまま。
私はこれを『ビキニライン駐車場』と名付けました。
だって「軽が少し、はみ出るのが心配」
４年ほどまえに名付けたのですが、言うと必ず喜んでもらえます。
